    ​Role Description: The Endpoint Services Section within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD) requires ICT System Administrators to maintain application support processes, and check that all requests for support are dealt with according to agreed procedures. ICT System Administrators use application management software and tools to investigate issues, collect performance statistics and create reports.

    Major Responsibilities:
    • Use application management software and tools to investigate issues.
    • Investigate and coordinate the resolution of potential and actual service problems around system software.
    • Install, test and advise on the correct use of new versions of system software including those within a VDI environment.
    • Work as part of a team to ensure ICT hardware configuration and type is appropriate for application support and functional operations.
    • Prepare and maintain application support processes and operational documentation.
    • Collect performance and usage statistics on applications for reporting.
    • Work as part of a team to manage incidents, problems, continuous service improvement and workflows to meet deadlines.
    • Contribute technical knowledge and industry best practice to a customer focused, security enabled global ICT platform.
    • Engage and liaise with assigned Project Management Office resources regarding ICT deliverables.
    • Engage and liaise with customers of capabilities to ensure user stories are delivered against.
    • Draft, review and maintain standard operating procedures, knowledge base articles and other relevant documentation.
    • Assist in the continuous improvement process by developing and enhancing procedures.

    Other Skills:
    • Demonstrated experience in application packaging within a VDI environment and using deployment technologies like AppV or AppVolumes.
    • Demonstrated experience in System Center Configuration Manager.
    • An understanding of modern scripting practices and languages to automate process, gather information and resolve common issues.

    Mission Data Division (MD) within the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), will deliver cutting edge capabilities to Defence through a variety of different programmes and projects. To facilitate this ASD has a requirement for a AWS System Administrator (Operations).

    The AWS System Administrator (Operations) will work under general direction as part of a small team in the operation and control of software development & team collaboration platforms; including the installation, integration and support of cloud hosted infrastructure.

    This team works within a framework of legislation, principles and work practices, including management of corporate information in accordance with the Privacy Act, compliance with the Australian Government Information Security Manual, and Agile workload management.

    Major Responsibilities:
    • Use standard AWS infrastructure features to build and/or integrate services in support of MD initiatives. 
    • Contribute to the operation and support of cloud hosted services within Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment.
    • With guidance create and manage scripts to automate system build, configuration & monitoring.
    • Assist with Monitoring the performance of services and provide system backup and recovery.
    • Implement best practice Cloud security and support the operation of a security accredited environment.
    • Receive and handle support requests via service desk system. 
    • Document daily work (steps taken, reasons and outcomes) to ensure transition of knowledge to the Commonwealth and to enable repeatability of procedures and compliance with relevant standards, including Commonwealth record keeping responsibilities.

    Administration and monitoring of security systems.  This includes integration of security and monitoring services with customer networks, as well as engagement with customers on security requirements and ongoing security improvement to systems.

    Major Responsibilities:
    • Maintain security administration processes and check that all requests for support are dealt with according to agreed procedures. Develop support documentation of processes and systems. Provide knowledge transfer and training to staff on security systems.
    • Investigate security breaches in accordance with established procedures, recommend required actions and support follow up to ensure these are implemented.
    • Install and configure COTS network security devices such as Next Generation Firewalls (NGFW), Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS), NetFlow and Network Visibility appliances.
    • Carry out agreed operational procedures, including network configuration, installation and maintenance and patching of network security systems. Use network management tools to collect and report on network load and performance statistics.

    Other Skills:
    Essential:
    • Experience in a Security Operations Centre (SOC) including security monitoring and incident response. This includes demonstrated experience in developing SOC documentation, including analyst play-books and security use-cases.
    Desirable:
    • Experience in developing scripts or small programs, in software languages such as Python or Bash, to automate business processes and integrate existing security tool and appliances
    • Demonstrated experience with network security technologies from vendors such as Palo Alto, Cisco, Sourcefire, FireEye, Blue Coat, Gigamon and Ixia.
